Going Greek in the Hair Industry - Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority & Fraternity, Inc.
- By Mrs. Jimmie Sanders Brown, Professional Cosmetologist, Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Specialist

Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority and Fraternity, Inc. is a Greek-lettered international service organization dedicated to the development of the hair care and beauty professional and the advancement and promotion of the entire beauty industry throughtout the United States and the world. ACPO was established on October 27, 1945 in Washington, D.C. by legendary founder Dr. Marjorie Stewart Joyner and her co-founders, renowned educator Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and United States Congressman William Dawson.
Dr. Joyner, was the first black to graduate from A.B. Molar Beauty School in 1916, mentored by Madame C. J. Walker, and became an instructor and a distributor. In 1919, upon Walker's death, she became President of the company, the National Supervisor over the operation of its 200 beauty schools, the first African American woman to hold a U.S. patent ( permanent wave machine in 1928), and she created the "Satin Tress" product line. On Oct. 27, 1945, Joyner founded the United Beauty School Owners & Teachers Association & the Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority & Fraternity, Inc. African Americans were barred from White trade associations then and were treated unfair in an industry they helped to develop and maintain. Dr. Joyner received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology at age 77, from Bethune-Cookman College and a freshman dormitory (Joyner Hall) bears her name. She proved, we have a voice and are not "grease monkeys", as were then called. Dr. Marjorie Stewart Joyner was an entrepreneur, inventor, salon owner, community leader, mother, wife, Christian woman and my Soror. She was the premier stylists for many actresses and singers of her day. She also helped along with industry friends elect officials into office.
ACPO National project is the The Bethune Foundation at Bethune-Cookman University. Among ACPO’s national projects is the promotion and maintenance of the historic home and museum of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, located on the beautiful campus of the Bethune-Cookman University, to which they have gifted over one million dollars. The national scholarship program, the Mr. and Mrs. Alpha Chi Pi Omega Scholarship Pageant, was organized to assist deserving youth in furthering their successful future. We have implemented various national social service and community involvement programs to assist those in need, and to empower the beauty and hair care professional.
